The courier company DPD Eesti signed a contract last week for the construction of a new parcel terminal and distribution centre. Construction will begin this spring and the complex will be completed in early 2012. The new distribution centre will provide an even better parcel delivery service quality throughout Estonia for both new and existing clients. Also provide a wide range of domestic and international courier service and serve increasing client base.

During the first stage, the total area in the new modern parcel terminal will be over 2,300 m2. In addition, the complex will allow for further expansion based on the future needs of DPD Eesti clients.

According to DPD Eesti Managing Director Tarmo Tael, the new logistics centre will be equipped with modern sorting technology, which will allow clients’ shipments to be handled even faster, more securely and precisely, and in significantly larger volumes. “If we are able to deliver each package even one second faster, this amounts to total annual savings in terms of time for our clients of more than 555 hours, which is almost equivalent to a 13th calendar month. This is definitely very valuable because time is expensive. The parcel sorting technology will also be new. We are very excited about delivering the first packages to our customers from the brand new distribution centre,” Tael said.

“The investment is also confirmation and thanks to our clients for their trust. They have been DPD’s best advisers and have encouraged us to launch innovative solutions to the market,” Tael added. “Why the Jüri industrial Parks in Harju County, where the Kalev candy factory and Rimi retail company are also located? The choice of this location was based on its excellent logistical placement – Jüri Industrial Park is situated in the vicinity of Tallinn near the Tallinn-Tartu Highway and the Tallinn Ring Road,” Tael explained.

The company’s new distribution centre will be built in cooperation with OÜ Astlanda Ehitus, which, among other projects, is reconstructing the Cultural Cauldron and building the administrative area of Ämari Airbase.

International delivery company DPD and Estonian-owned delivery company Cargobus, both of which have been operating in the Estonian parcel delivery market for more than 15 years, have signed a co-operation agreement, which means that DPD Parcel Shops will be opened at all Cargobus locations across Estonia from 6th September. In total, 24 new DPD Parcel Shops were opened.

The Parcel Shops provide people with the opportunity to send items throughout Europe in a simple and affordable manner within 1–8 working days, depending on the country of destination. During the first stage of opening the DPD Parcel Shops, customers can deliver parcels to 22 European countries. Courier parcels sent through Parcel Shops are guaranteed to be delivered speedily and at affordable rates. For example, a parcel shipped from Estonia to Stockholm, Sweden, will reach its destination no later two workdays after it is sent. Shipping a parcel to Munich, Germany, takes 4–6 working days.

DPD Parcel Shops are being opened in Cargobus locations in all county centres as well as in some smaller towns in order to offer equal access to shipping services for people who live in rural areas. “In the future, a Parcel Shop may be based in a local beauty salon, shopping centre, kiosk, or a flower shop in Tallinn. In Germany and Sweden, for example, the network of Parcel Shops is very well developed and is more accessible to people who want to send and receive parcels than the network of local post offices. We are moving in the same direction in Estonia,” said Tarmo Tael, Managing Director of DPD Eesti.

The advantage of a Parcel Shop lies in the fact that parcels sent abroad using DPD’s services are delivered to the recipient’s home or office, rather than to a post office that the recipient would have to visit in order to pick up the parcel. In the new DPD Parcel Shops, the customer service agents are the Cargobus service staff, not a machine. Customers can pay for the parcel delivery service on the spot. The services are targeted towards private individuals in both rural and urban areas as well as companies. As of the autumn/winter of 2010, it will be possible for DPD customers to order goods and have them delivered to the Parcel Shops. “For example, you can use our new affordable service to have products that have been ordered from a catalogue or e-shop delivered to your nearest Cargobus location with a DPD Parcel Shop and pick the delivered goods up at your convenience," added Tael.

The Parcel Shop service is suitable for individuals as well as business customers who do not wish to make a delivery contract due to their low shipping volumes. They can bring their own parcel to a Parcel Shop, pay for the shipping service, and immediately send the parcel on its way. Items can be sent and picked up at any time during Cargobus office hours. Also, since the customers provide part of the service themselves (by dropping off or picking up the parcels), the price of the service is consumer-friendly.
